I think I figured it out! It's rust!

Metals oxidize - combine with oxygen - to form rust. It's like a form of slow burning, really!

So my oxygen is being consumed by a chemical reaction - the oxidation of metal.

The only problem is, I haven't figured out exactly what's rusting. Or why my pod's got rust and no one else's does. And it must be a LOT of rust, to use up all the oxygen that's missing by now.
